Title: Communications Director

Conservation Voters New Mexico (CVNM) and CVNM Education Fund are a family of nonprofit organizations headquartered in Santa Fe, NM. We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Communications Director to oversee all aspects of the organization’s external communications to support and grow CVNM and CVNM Education Fund’s program reach. The Communications Director will plan and implement strategies that help to raise the profile of our organization’s work in the media, build strong relationships with press, and energize our base of volunteers and supporters. The right candidate for this role will have demonstrated success in working with the media, executing media strategies, and strong written and spoken communication skills.
The Communications Director must be committed to our mission and values of authentic community and stakeholder engagement in policy work, and equitable opportunities that promote race equity, diversity, and inclusion. CVNM staff incorporate these values into our day-to-day systems and work, and provide key support for collaboration across departments and organizational partnerships.
This position is based in Santa Fe, and requires the ability to work a non-standard work week including some evenings and weekends, and travel in and out of state as needed.
- Lead communications strategy development and implementation that resonates with CVNM & CVNMEF’s audiences, mission, and vision, including: press engagement, spokesperson training, messaging, earned media, and others;
- Implement an online mobilization program including growing CVNM’s online base, and authoring action alerts;
- Coordinate and support the communications activities of CVNM & CVNMEF’s programs, including managing and implementing concrete communications projects like earned media pushes, developing and managing messaging, collaborating with staff across departments, and developing mailers and one-pagers;
- Track media coverage, and identify opportunities for rapid-response communication needs;
- Copy edit and review all organizational materials to ensure they reflect the brand, mission, and vision of the organization;
- Oversee and implement strategies that communicate the organization’s work to our membership, including the organization’s newsletter publication process and/or assisting with the legislative agenda;
- Represent CVNM & CVNMEF in coalition settings, as needed;
- Comply with CVNM policies and procedures; and
- Other duties as assigned by CVNM leadership.
- Minimum 5+ years of communications, marketing, and/or media engagement experience;
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills. Excellent spoken and written Spanish communications skills are a plus;
- Demonstrated success using available tools and platforms in the social media and online space;
- Proven ability to create strong press strategy, messaging, newsworthy events and pitches, story ideas and follow through with pitch leads and creative digital execution;
- Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite;
- Strong organizational abilities including collaborating, planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation;
- A team player who is comfortable managing several responsibilities and pitching in where needed;
- Exemplary proficiency in interpersonal communication, listening and conflict resolution; diplomatic in resolving issues, and an ability to maintain a positive solution-based approach in high pressure or difficult situations;
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity, and an interest or commitment to work on environmental issues that impact our air, land, water and community health; and
- A belief that who we elect matters and that the protection of New Mexico’s land, air and water should be a political priority. Knowledge of how a bill becomes a law is a plus.
